2024 Lingnan TCM Culture. Study Tour. 2024/

A trip to experience the “Lingnan TCM Culture. Study Tour. 2024” with eyes and ears. 旅學.2024」交流會 片段 ✦ On January 9th, eight participating schools in the study tour sent teacher and student representatives to gather at Inno Theatre 1 of the Hong Kong Productivity Council in Kowloon Tong for an exchange meeting about their trip. While waiting in the lobby, groups of all sizes were busy practicing and making a final rehearsal.   At the exchange meeting, some students were nervous, some were confident. The presentations of their study tour reports clearly showed a lot of effort. From introducing attractions to the format and interview clips, to their personal feelings. It was diverse and comprehensive with each group shining in their own way. With the teachers’ support and even personal participation in sharing their experiences, everyone gained a lot. The whole session was not only exciting and wonderful but also garnered high praise for the tour arrangements. Attendees were immersed in a joyful learning atmosphere and felt deeply moved.   The students were delighted seeing Dr. Au and Dr. Kwok, who accompanied them on the study tour again. The two Chinese Medicine Practitioners shared their feelings about interacting with the students during the trip. As advocates for promoting traditional Chinese medicine culture and education, they hoped the students would gain something from the study tour experience and share it with their peers.   Towards the end of the exchange meeting, we introduced educational resource packages related to “Lingnan Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture” for extended learning. These two kits, “Intangible Cultural Heritage - Herbal Tea” and “Q&A - Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture and Lingnan Tea and Medicated Diet”, revolve around Lingnan geography, culture, life, and health. They guide students to learn about the characteristics of integrating traditional Chinese medicine into daily life and medicated diets, embodying the spirit of “preventive treatment” in traditional Chinese medicine culture. They also explore the folk wisdom behind Lingnan’s unique herbal tea and herbal tea culture, as well as the essence of becoming an intangible cultural heritage.   The educational resource packages are now available for download on the “Lingnan Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture. Study Tour. 2024” website, along with a short introductory video. A teacher’s version of the packages is also available, including lesson plans, answer and suggested references to facilitate classroom teaching.   Thank you to all for taking time to participate amidst busy tests and exams, for immersing yourselves in the journey, and for putting your hearts into creating the reports. This allows visitors to the “Lingnan Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture. Study Tour. 2024” website to experience the vastness and fun of “Lingnan Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture” through their eyes and ears.   Finally, we thank the Chinese Medicine Development Fund for their funding, which gave the students and teachers the opportunity to participate. The students’ laughter and engagement, the teachers’ recognition and appreciation, and the parents’ support and encouragement have injected a powerful boost of motivation into our work of promoting traditional Chinese medicine culture.

School Class/

Takeaway of Chinese Medicine Culture on Campus – “Traveling through Time and Space, Learn from a Master” 剛過去的 12 月,我們與油蔴地天主教小學(海泓道)合作策劃了一個中醫藥文化的「主題學習週」,主題是「穿越時空,拜師學藝」,讓六年級的同學在中醫師及導師帶領下進行各項學習與體驗。 In December, we worked with Yaumatei Catholic Primary School (Hoi Wang Road) to plan a “Theme Learning Week” on Chinese medicine culture. The theme was “Traveling through time and space, learning from a master”. Conduct various learning and experience activities under the guidance of a tutor. The themes are divided into five groups, namely Culture, Health Preservation, Syndrome Differentiation, Meridians and Materia Medica. Students will apprentice according to their groups and then embark on several days of learning and experience. The Cultural group focuses on healthy living and moral education; the Health Preservation group combines both dynamic and static activities, learning the “Campus Wuqinxi” to keep fit and absorbing the unique culture and significance of Lingnan herbal tea; the Syndrome Differentiation group explores the health concept of traditional Chinese medicine and takes into account the impact of personal constitution; The Meridian group learned everything from the concept of meridian acupoints to the various methods of TCM for treating internal diseases with external treatments; the Materia Medica group understood the principles of herbal medicine in treating diseases through the classification of Chinese medicine and the understanding of the four qi and five flavors. In addition to classes and workshops, the students were most excited to go out of campus and visit the Baptist University Chinese Medicine Museum, listen to and taste the history and authentic taste of Herbal Jelly at the Hoitintong Main Store and get to the pharmacy and clinic of Chinese Medicine For All (CMA) to learn about Medicine and herbs. The results of the “Theme Learning Week” were gathered at the weekend. The school auditorium has become a hall for display and sharing. The team members showed what they had learned to students, parents and guests of all levels. They demonstrated the Campus Wuqinxi, transformed into doctors to explain the nine types of body constitutions, played a short play about traditional Chinese medicine stories written, directed and performed by the team, and demonstrated the homemade meridian medicine hammer and the unique “Classic of Materia Medica”, each themed booths were crowded with curious audiences, giving out happy laughter and heartfelt praise. The day’s herbal painting exhibition, glass cabinets and free consultations by Chinese medicine practitioners made the entire learning and sharing experience a complete and rich one. Through a week of learning and experiencing the theme of TCM culture, we are very happy that students can deepen their understanding of TCM culture, transcend the flat impression of seeing a doctor and taking medicine, and thus take root in their daily lives.

2024 Lingnan TCM Culture. Study Tour. 2024/

Please pay attention! The bus to “Lingnan Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture” is about to leave ! November and December are the months of “Lingnan Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture. Study Tour. 2024”, all the departure dates are marked. Students and teachers gathered at school early in the morning and took the tour bus to Guangzhou. Because this is a good learning opportunity to get out of the classroom, break away from graphic information and absorb the novel Chinese medicine culture, the students are extremely excited.   As you step into the “Guangdong Chinese Medicine Museum”, the three-story height 600 bottles of magnificent original-color macerated specimens of medicinal plants attracted your attention. “Is it real?” Everyone looked at the precious rhinoceros’s specimens in the lobby and exclaimed in admiration. There are many exhibits in the museum far beyond the imagination of the students. Ganoderma lucidum and cinnamon can be so large. Scented whales are so precious!   The “Guangdong Herbal Tea Museum” is an exhibition hall that blends tradition and technology. Here, not only can learn about the herbal tea allusions. The most profound thing is that you can use the medicine mortar and grinder to pound medicine and make your own sachets with medicinal flavor.   During the move, we played mini-games about Chinese medicine and arrived at the restaurant noisily. After dinner, we had a sharing session with the practitioner. They talked about how the climate characteristics of Hong Kong affect daily diet and how is the Chinese medicine package included “Jun, Chen, Zuo, Shi” in it. We spent the happy learning time with mini games.   You have to walk through it to understand how big the “South China Botanical Garden” is. There are various Chinese herbal plants along the way within reach. The tour guide showed everyone a leaf that looks ordinary but has a familiar aroma. That’s lemon eucalyptus, which can be used to repel mosquitoes. The students happily picked it up as a souvenir. We came to the highlights of the garden - super large “greenhouse”. A greenhouse contains various landscapes such as tropical rainforest plants, desert plants, alpine and polar plants etc. There are rare growth landscapes such as “A single tree forest”, “Strangler fig” or “Columnar tree”, etc., allowing students to understand the various survival and evolution of plants.   There is also the “Guangzhou Shennong Cao Tang Zhongyiyao Museum”, where the history of traditional Chinese medicine is displayed in relief art. The museum's garden layout blends various histories and cultures. The medicinal botanical garden has an area of unusual toxic traditional Chinese medicine plants. Everyone consciously stood at a distance to see “Heartbroken Grass” and “Antiaris toxicaria”. The “Wanglaoji Liangcha Museum” introduces the history of herbal tea through multiple senses. We can see the care of herbal tea culture for the people through histories.   Although a little tired after two days and a night but full of happy memories, everyone went home with intangible and tangible rewards. Because everyone showed enthusiasm and enjoyment during the trip, I am really looking forward to seeing the students’ trip reports and their look back perspective on this “Lingnan Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture Study Tour”.   After each participating student’s report is completed, it will be uploaded to the website of “Lingnan Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture. Study Tour. 2024” for public viewing. The “Lingnan Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture. Study Tour. 2024” website has been launched. It contains rich content including introductions to participating schools, highlights of the characteristics of study tour attractions, Lingnan special Chinese medicine and culture, and introductions to pharmaceutical factories that full of historical footprints.
